I first learned about the Friends for Life Bike Rally over 10 years ago when I followed one of my best friends journey through training, fundraising, making his journey and finally his triumphant arrival in Montreal. I was captivated and impressed by what him and his teammates were able to accomplish! The thought of doing it myself, however, was terrifying! So year after year I watched my friends do the Bike Rally, always doubting that it's something I could accomplish myself.
So what changed? Why am I finally facing my fears and taking on the challenge of doing the Bike Rally this year? Well, I've battled with depression and anxiety for most of my adult life, and I recently learned a great piece of advice on overcoming it. Start with helping others: the mutual social benefits of reconnecting with others and helping them will help yourself too! When I attended the Bike Rally arrival party this past August to cheer on my friends, I was blown away by the good vibes and connections that everyone shared, all I the name of helping to raise funds and support the PWA. I thought to myself, here was a community that I wanted to help and be a part of, and so I finally made up my mind to sign up! I've tried to do the ride to Montreal twice so far, but the pandemic had different plans, this is my first year where I finally hope to make it all the way!
Fighting HIV stigma is also a huge goal of mine during this fundraising effort. I hope that I can help spread education about living with HIV/AIDS to change people's perceptions and eliminate HIV stigma!
People living with HIV face many challenges: episodes of illness, numerous life transitions, discrimination, financial difficulties, social isolation, side effects from medications and long term effects from the virus – to name but a few. The funds raised through the Bike Rally help provide a safe place to express those concerns and a place where practical information and support services are available.
Your donations are greatly appreciated and will help make a difference in so many people's lives. The PWA has helped friends and acquaintances of mine get the support they need to turn their lives around and give them a bright future! I can only do this with your support!!
